WIND & VOID

This painting by Musashi seems to reflect both wind and void, since it appears this bird would only fly if there was a gust of wind, and void being the vast emptiness that surrounds the bird from where it is perched. The animals that he paints are all of birds, and outside of his self-portrait, he has either painted people or made sculptures of entities in human form that are spriritual in nature (Dharma, and Fudo Myo.)

Musashi was a "ronin" an independant and self-reliant samurai, who journeyed all across the frontier and engaged in one adventure after another, after leaving the small mountain village from where he spent his childhood. In later years he became a teacher of his own style of fencing, using two swords as one. There was great interest throughout the land from prominent daimyos (warlords) who sought his services as an advisor and teacher for the training of their personnel. Musashi's most famous battle was with another notable samurai, Sasaki Kojiro. Kojiro being defeated with a swift blow to the head with a wooden sword that Musashi had carved from an oar.

We will continue to introduce excerpts from the Book of Wind and Book of Void or Emptiness. More coming soon!
Since there are a number of translations and paraphrased versions of Mushashi's GO RIN NO SHO, we have in some cases paraphrased some of these translations as well, so they can be more easily understood. More coming soon!
We hope this website will help you to apply Musashi's strategy to your life and enrich it. This website was designed with links to share and introduce the exceptional works of others with their informative websites on the subject of Musashi. The creator of this website is pleased to announce, his original creation of an upcoming story loosely based on one version of Musashi's encounter with the great daimyo, Lord Masamune, who's advisors and ninjas (spies) had kept a very watchful eye on Musashi's legendary exploits, in the hopes of someday recruiting him. Lord Masamune was involved in a plot to conquer Japan through an alliance with Spain, of which had a presence in Japan at the time, through its trading ships and emissaries. Experience Musashi through the eyes of the Spaniards; a story of passion, intrique, and adventure! Coming Soon! Hopefully, on the big screen near you.
